Nucchina unde – steamed pakora Karnatak style

Like many people in this world , loosing weight is an ongoing procedure in my life. I keep trying to add new healthy recipes in my life which can satisfy my taste buds and also keep my weight in control.

This Karnataka style steamed pakora was a revelation- low fat low carbs low cal yet high protein yummilicious and simple to make. When my dietician asked me to make this I was apprehensive but after making it, it has become a regular feature in my home.

The biggest reason being that it’s completely oil free , kids loved it and it’s super healthy.

Try this different kind of snack which can be eaten with tea or as breakfast and even as school tiffin. It’s almost like a gujrati muthiya with difference being it’s made with lentils and not rice or besan.

Ingredients

  • Arhar dal or tuvar dal – 1 cup
  • Chana dal – 1/2 cup
  • Desiccated coconut or fresh grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Ginger – 1/2 inch grated
  • Carom seeds – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Degi mirch – 1 tsp
  • Salt – as per taste
  • Green chillies – 2-3
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Coriander leaves – few sprigs chopped

Method

  1. Soak both the dals for 2-3 hours atleast. After 3 hours, drain the water.
  2. In a mixer grinder, add the dal, desiccated coconut or grated fresh coconut, ginger, green chilli, curry leaves and coriander leaves.
  3. Grind them coarsely without any water.
  4. Take out the grinded mix in a bowl, add salt, coriander powder, Carom seeds and degi mirch.
  5. Boil some water in a idli steamer. Grease the idli mould plates.
  6. Take the mix and make oval shaped dumplings with wet hands. Place them in the idli moulds.
  7. Let them steam for 10-15 mins. Check by inserting a knife. If done then knife will come clean. Don’t overcook or it will dry out.
  8. Serve with coconut chutney, peanut chutney or even green coriander chutney. Enjoy these steamed spicy pakoras hot.
